Bronx Buffalo page 1

A comic featuring Phillip Gerba being stopped by a heard of bison as he drives through Montana, bison at the Bronx Zoo and William Hornaday.

This is a fun look into my pre NYC days. Sometimes it still amazes me to think about how much time I spent in a car back then. Although I occasionally miss being able to travel a bit more freely on my time off, I greatly prefer commuting by subway. Next week I will take a deeper dive into Mr. Hornaday's work with the bison.

You may have noticed that I've used both bison and buffalo to refer to the species with the unsurprising scientific name of "bison bison". Without getting too deeply into my linguistic philosophies, I used both terms because both are in common use, and unlikely to cause confusion in this context. Because of the constant competition for space between the art and the text in any given panel "bison" won out far more often in the comic page. I personally prefer buffalo because that was what I was raised calling them, and like the sound of the word. Hornaday on the other hand preferred "bison" because he feared that they might be confused with the unrelated buffalo of Europe and Asia.
