Shakespeare and his works have had an over-sized influence on English as a language. Some might even say that it is the foundation for English speaking culture. That means that it should be no surprise that when the English spread themselves across the globe they wanted to bring the trappings of Shakespeare's England.

Schieffelin's efforts might seem like sheer folly in hindsight, but he was earnestly trying to improve his community. It makes me wonder what missteps we will make when, like the English, we humans spread our culture from our home here on Earth. What will we bring to other planets that latter generations might regret?
